While the cost of living in New York City may be sky-high, planning a vacation to go there doesn’t have to be.

Midtown Manhattan

Midtown Manhattan

Manhattan, the borough that’s been featured in countless films, magazines, artworks, and even music, has its fair share of budget-friendly but still quality attractions, restaurants, and hotels.

Whether you want to enjoy a cheap slice of pizza or visit a museum, Manhattan hosts a variety of experiences that won’t drain your wallet, while giving you an authentic New York City experience.

The Best Places To See

For all the art-lovers out there, New York City hosts a plethora of art attractions, be it operas or museums.

In fact, Manhattan alone has 32 museums – many of them which are world-renowned. You can find everything from contemporary to modern to specific niche museums, such as the American Folk Museum. The best part about these museums is that many of them are free.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you are a student or if you work for a major corporation, you may be lucky enough to get into the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a donation as small as one penny.

The American Folk Museum is free everyday, whereas several other museums, such as the famous Museum of Modern Art, the Morgan Museum and Library, and the Rubin Museum of Art open their doors free of charge on certain hours of the week.

Once museums close, you can head over to Broadway to see a famous Broadway play, Lincoln Center to see a ballet or opera, or watch an orchestra perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

Ticket prices are usually accommodating if you are with children or seniors, and you can always find a good deal or a cheap show. Whether you revel in the opulence and music of a Verdi opera or contemplate the meaning of the latest contemporary sculpture in a trendy gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan has no end of attractions to those of us who are artistically inclined.

Do Your Research For A Great Trip

For those of you who want to explore the city’s outdoor attractions, there are many tour groups or self-done excursions around Manhattan.

Central Park Belvedere Castel

One of our favorite’s is Central Park, which can be enjoyed during any season. In the summer, its extensive lawns serve as a perfect resting place for lunch.

You can visit the Central Park Zoo, enjoy the views of the lake, the pond, or the Conservatory garden, explore Belvedere castle, or just walk around and take in all that Manhattan’s largest park has to offer.

During the winter, you can go ice-skating at Wollman Rink. What is so unique about Manhattan (and New York City in general), is that for such a large and seemingly dense city, there are a lot of green spaces that you can enjoy when you are not in the vicinity of Central Park (and your eyes begin to miss a bit of greenery).

There is Battery Park in Battery Park City, small parks scattered around Gramercy, the Highline Park (an exquisite 1.45 mile-long elevated park that was built on an old railroad track stretching along the west side of Manhattan), and Fort Tryon Park which hosts a gorgeous collection of medieval art in the other-worldy Cloister Museum.

In addition to parks, Manhattan hosts a variety of architectural sites that can be seen either by taking one of the famous double-decker tour buses, or by taking a walk (feel free to take the MTA – the subway or the bus system – if you get tired as their system is extensive, frequent, and fairly cheap).

Visit Rockefeller Center, where in the winter you can see the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree or decide to splurge and go ice-skating on Rockefeller’s famous ice-rink.

Visit Bryant Park, where if the lights and shopping become just too much, you can relax and sit in the quiet New York City Public Library – a building as impressive as the book collection within it. Speaking of impressive feats of architecture, check out the Empire State Building, where for a small fee you can go up to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the entire city.

Visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum, one of the newer additions to the beautiful contemporary architecture that has been appearing throughout the borough, or visit the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in the United States

opened in 1883. If the weather is pleasant, consider taking a walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn and enjoy the scenery.

Whatever your interests are, there is no end to finding things to do in Manhattan. The best part is that most of these places are either free or are fairly cheap. Exploring the city itself is free and rewarding as there are hidden gems all over the city.

Manhattan has a way of being accommodating even in rain and snow, so regardless of weather and regardless of season, there are always things to do and see.

Eat To Your Hearts Content

After all of this walking and exploring, I can assume that you will have worked up quite an appetite. Looking for a budget-friendly but high-quality meal in Manhattan may seem daunting as no doubt you will have walked past some pretty impressive looking restaurants.

Not only that but the variety of food choices seem endless. Definitely a borough for a foodie,

If you are looking for sit-down options there are trendy and fairly reasonable restaurants popping up in the lower east side and upper east side neighborhoods of Manhattan. Looking to enjoy high-quality food regardless of price?

New York City hosts 4 of the top 50 restaurants in the world, one of which takes a place in the top 10. If you want to splurge, head over to the West Village where you can find intimate, quiet restaurants and maybe even spot a celebrity or two.

After sight-seeing for hours, exploring new cuisines, and indulging in Manhattan’s exciting nightlife, one of the best parts will be to fling yourself on a comfortable bed and reminisce about everything you’ve experienced.

Luckily, you don’t have to travel far from the excitement to find high-quality accommodations. There are hotels in every part of Manhattan, so just choose a favorite neighborhood and book. Now that you know how affordable Manhattan can be, do you feel like splurging for the ultimate hotel experience, making even the wealthiest Wall Street brokers green with envy?

Drake Hotel

Drake Hotel

I always like to be within walking distance of the things I want to see and do so I can spend more time enjoying the trip. If you are willing to spend a little more and you want luxury, you should consider the world famous Drake Hotel or the always elegant Four Seasons.

If you prefer to spend your money on other things, you can also choose from several cheap hotels in downtown Chicago including many reputable chains like Marriott, Comfort Suites and Best Western. I personally prefer staying in one of the cheap hotels in downtown Chicago that offers comfort and clean rooms but gives me more money to spend on shopping and dining.

Don’t Miss Chicago’s Famed RiverWalk

Chicago RiverWalk

Chicago RiverWalk

Another popular tourist attraction is the Chicago Riverwalk. This open air walkway provides amazing views of the city’s architecture both day and night and also of the beautiful Chicago River.

I don’t think there is anything more beautiful than the lights of Chicago as they reflect off of the Chicago River.

Here you can rent a boat to explore the river, sit on a bench and enjoy the sights or dine at one of the many restaurants along the Riverwalk.

You can enjoy an elegant meal at the Chicago Cut Steakhouse or try some cutting edge cuisine like bone marrow at The Purple Pig. You could easily spend a full weekend taking in the sights of the Chicago Riverwalk.

If you want a Chicago hotel with an unbeatable view, you should consider one of the many luxury hotels like Trump International Hotel and Tower. You could also go with a cheaper chain hotel which would still provide the views just not as much luxury.

Some of the Best Museums in the World

Chicago Art

Chicago Art

Chicago is a great place for art lovers, with two wonderful art museums and many independent art galleries. The Art Institute of Chicago is somewhere you could spend an entire day, with almost 300,000 amazing works of art including many by some of the most well known artists in the world.

Their collection includes artwork from almost every era so no matter what you are interested in, you are sure to enjoy this incredible museum. If you are interested in modern art, you should definitely visit the Museum of Contemporary Art which contains an incredible collection of cutting edge art.

One of my favorite places to visit to enjoy the art scene in Chicago is the Art District. When you stay at one of the nearby hotels, you can enjoy the galleries featuring local artwork, visit local dance studios or spend some time browsing one of the many eclectic bookstores in the district.

If you are interested in educational and art museums, Chicago has some of the best ones in the country for you to visit. The Field Museum has an amazing collection of natural history exhibits from all around the world that will inspire and amaze visitors of all ages.

The Shedd Aquarium is another fascinating place to visit no matter what your age. This is one of the top aquariums in the country with exhibits from all around the world. Both these museums are located close to the lake shore so the views will be amazing as well.

If these museums appeal to you, you will be happy to know you can find great Chicago hotel deals that will put you right in the middle of these great museums. I love being able to walk to the museums in Chicago from my hotel.

Part of the charm of Chicago is walking the city streets with the locals. The Essex Inn is a modern hotel with a beautiful enclosed rooftop pool perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view of the lake. The Best Western Grand Park is another option if you want to be near these incredible museums.

Ritz Carlton

Ritz Carlton

There are several cheap Chicago hotels within walking distance of 360 Chicago including the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites. If you prefer one of the many luxury hotels in downtown Chicago near this great tourist attraction, you should consider the Ritz-Carlton Chicago or the Park Hyatt.

The Hyatt Regency on the lake shore is a great option near the Art District for those who want to stay at one of the best hotels in Chicago in one of the best locations.

Another place you don’t want to miss, especially if you love great views and a good scare, is the 360 Chicago, formerly the Hancock Observatory. At 360 Chicago, you can experience unparalleled views of the city from the open air observation deck.

Whether you visit in the morning or after dark when the city lights are shining, you will get amazing photographs. From 360 Chicago, you can see the entire city. If you are really adventurous, like me, you will love their new thrill ride called Tilt as much as I did.

This ride starts out with you standing up looking out at the city and slowly tilts down so that eventually you are almost flat on your stomach which gives you a whole new view of the city!

There are hotels in all different parts of the city including many classic Chicago luxury hotels as well as cheap Chicago hotels that are just as clean and comfortable but a little more basic.

I suggest you do some research and determine what part of the city you will be spending most of your time in and look for Chicago hotel deals that meet your needs. Chicago is an amazing city so you are sure to enjoy your stay!
