The Best Places To See

For all the art-lovers out there, New York City hosts a plethora of art attractions, be it operas or museums.

In fact, Manhattan alone has 32 museums – many of them which are world-renowned. You can find everything from contemporary to modern to specific niche museums, such as the American Folk Museum. The best part about these museums is that many of them are free.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you are a student or if you work for a major corporation, you may be lucky enough to get into the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a donation as small as one penny.

The American Folk Museum is free everyday, whereas several other museums, such as the famous Museum of Modern Art, the Morgan Museum and Library, and the Rubin Museum of Art open their doors free of charge on certain hours of the week.

Once museums close, you can head over to Broadway to see a famous Broadway play, Lincoln Center to see a ballet or opera, or watch an orchestra perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

Ticket prices are usually accommodating if you are with children or seniors, and you can always find a good deal or a cheap show. Whether you revel in the opulence and music of a Verdi opera or contemplate the meaning of the latest contemporary sculpture in a trendy gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan has no end of attractions to those of us who are artistically inclined.

Do Your Research For A Great Trip

For those of you who want to explore the city’s outdoor attractions, there are many tour groups or self-done excursions around Manhattan.

Central Park Belvedere Castel

One of our favorite’s is Central Park, which can be enjoyed during any season. In the summer, its extensive lawns serve as a perfect resting place for lunch.

You can visit the Central Park Zoo, enjoy the views of the lake, the pond, or the Conservatory garden, explore Belvedere castle, or just walk around and take in all that Manhattan’s largest park has to offer.

During the winter, you can go ice-skating at Wollman Rink. What is so unique about Manhattan (and New York City in general), is that for such a large and seemingly dense city, there are a lot of green spaces that you can enjoy when you are not in the vicinity of Central Park (and your eyes begin to miss a bit of greenery).

There is Battery Park in Battery Park City, small parks scattered around Gramercy, the Highline Park (an exquisite 1.45 mile-long elevated park that was built on an old railroad track stretching along the west side of Manhattan), and Fort Tryon Park which hosts a gorgeous collection of medieval art in the other-worldy Cloister Museum.

In addition to parks, Manhattan hosts a variety of architectural sites that can be seen either by taking one of the famous double-decker tour buses, or by taking a walk (feel free to take the MTA – the subway or the bus system – if you get tired as their system is extensive, frequent, and fairly cheap).

Visit Rockefeller Center, where in the winter you can see the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree or decide to splurge and go ice-skating on Rockefeller’s famous ice-rink.

Visit Bryant Park, where if the lights and shopping become just too much, you can relax and sit in the quiet New York City Public Library – a building as impressive as the book collection within it. Speaking of impressive feats of architecture, check out the Empire State Building, where for a small fee you can go up to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the entire city.

Visit the 9/11 Memorial Museum, one of the newer additions to the beautiful contemporary architecture that has been appearing throughout the borough, or visit the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in the United States

opened in 1883. If the weather is pleasant, consider taking a walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn and enjoy the scenery.

Whatever your interests are, there is no end to finding things to do in Manhattan. The best part is that most of these places are either free or are fairly cheap. Exploring the city itself is free and rewarding as there are hidden gems all over the city.

Manhattan has a way of being accommodating even in rain and snow, so regardless of weather and regardless of season, there are always things to do and see.
